I. TRANSPORT TO BRNO

Traveling by AIRPLANE

The nearest airports are in Brno, Prague, Vienna or Bratislava. For the cheapest flights check: https://kiwi.com/en/

Traveling by BUS

Take the Student Agency Express bus (from Prague to Brno, you will have to change a bus at main bus terminal Florence in Prague, from Vienna to Brno the bus is direct). There is a ticket office at Terminal 1 in Prague, in Vienna there is no ticket office, from either Prague or Vienna you can buy your ticket in advance and pay by credit card, it is really easy:

• Go to: https://jizdenky.studentagency.cz/
• In the place “Leaving from” choose: Praha Ruzyne, Terminal 1, in the place “Going to” choose: Brno, AN Grand
• Change the date and click Search coach service.
• Choose the suitable time and click on booking.
• Continue with the payment.
• After doing all of this, you will be able to print out your electronic bus ticket; you will also receive a confirmation email.

Traveling by TRAIN

Take the train from Prague to Brno, in this case, you need to take the city shuttle to get to the center and then take the metro (underground) to get to the train station (ask at the info desk at the airport about the details). There are two possible train stations: “Praha hlavni nadrazi”, and “Praha-Holesovice”, you can check the train schedule online at http://jizdnirady.idnes.cz/vlaky/spojeni/ , switch into English (bottom right corner) and insert the data needed as follows:

• In the place From: write either “Praha hl.n.”, or “Praha,Holešovice”, in the place To: write “Brno hl.n.”
• Change the date and time according to your arrival to Prague (please do not forget to count at least 2 hours extra time to get to the train station from the airport, it does not take that long but since you do not know the way, you must count some extra time to find it and time to buy the ticket at the train station to be on the safe side!).
• Click SEARCH
• You will then get the list of all possible trains, make sure to choose only a direct train to Brno so that you do not have to change the train somewhere with all the luggage you might have with you! The trip from Prague train station to Brno will take around 3 hours.

If you are taking the train from Vienna to Brno, then you need to take the bus from Vienna airport to the train station, take the bus that takes you to Wien Meidling (direction to Wien Westbahnhof but don’t forget to get off the train in the station “Wien Meidling”, bus schedule can be found here: http://www.oebb.at/busplan2011/118700.pdf), that’s the name of the train station from where you can take the direct train to Brno, when you get off the bus, you will find the train station right next to you, buy the ticket to get to Brno main station (Brno hl.n.). To check the train schedule from Vienna to Brno, go to http://jizdnirady.idnes.cz/vlakyautobusy/spojeni/ and follow the same steps as mentioned above, but instead of Praha stations, you will write the name of the station in Vienna, that is Wien Meidling. The trip takes around 1.5 hours.

If both cases (bus or train) from either Prague or Vienna, you will reach the same destination in Brno, that is Brno main station (in Czech “Brno hlavni nadrazi”).

II. Public transport in Brno

• All the existing transport modes in the big part of the South Moravian Region and City of Brno are connected in the Integrated Public Transport System of the South Moravian Region (abbr. IDS JMK) . Under the same conditions you can travel on local trains, regional busses, public city transport of Brno (trams, busses, trolley-busses) and city transport in the City of Blansko (busses). In all of these lines you can use the same tickets and pay the same prices and the very similar regulations are used. • You can not use the IDS JMK tickets in speed trains and in Ex, IC and EC trains as well as in long distance busses. There is a variable tariff system used to determine IDS JMK fares. The fare is determined by the expected length (time) of your travel and the number of fare zones.
• As long as you do not travel more than the time and number of zones you have paid for, you can transfer as many times as you like, even from train or trams to buses and back again. You can not transfer with two tickets - the 2 zones / 10 minutes ticket and the four-station ticket.
• To use the transport you need a validated ticket (stamped in a yellow machine immediately after getting on the vehicle) or a travel card. To get the student travel card (usefull savings when using public transport daily - 1,3,12 months travel card), you need 1 photograph and a certificate proving that you are a student of BUT (if you want this travel card, contact your international advisor). • Individual public transport tickets can be purchased at ticket machines or at newsagent. If you buy tickets directly from the tram/bus/trolley-bus driver, it will cost you more.

III. Intercity transport

• Brno area and the whole republic have a wide network of bus and train links. All bus tickets can be bought at the main Bus Station at Zvonařka. When travelling to Prague, bus connections are also available from Student Agency, opossite the Grand Hotel nearby the Main Railway Station. The bus to Prague goes every half an hour, a student ticket costs about 210 Czech crowns. You can buy train tickets at the Main Railway Station - both intercity and international - at a reduced price on your International Student Identity Card.
