The second edition of the joint presentation of investment projects for contractors in construction, design work, and related services took place on January 29 at the University Campus Bohunice. Masaryk University, the South Moravian Region, and Brno University of Technology (BUT) presented nearly 200 investment projects totaling over 5 billion CZK.
Among the most significant of the 30 investment projects for 2025 at Masaryk University are the expansion of the Faculty of Informatics, new sports infrastructure, the reconstruction of water and sewer systems at the Faculty of Education, and the completion of the Těšetice Archaeological Station near Znojmo. "We are proud to present such an extensive and well-thought-out investment plan, which not only modernizes our faculties but also offers potential for the development of the entire region," said Martin Hadaš, Head of the Public Procurement Department at Masaryk University.
A major transformation awaits the Faculty of Informatics building on Botanická Street. The extensive reconstruction, which includes demolishing the existing building and constructing a new five-story modern building worth 751 million CZK, began in January this year. "The reconstruction will provide the faculty with new teaching spaces, specialized classrooms, research laboratories, and staff offices. The design focuses on improving the building's energy balance and better accessibility for people with disabilities. The project also includes the installation of audiovisual equipment, a camera system, and interior furnishings for a total of about 67 million CZK," added Hadaš.
The construction of a multi-purpose sports complex at Masaryk University is expected to start in June this year. The contractor selection for the facility is currently underway. "The new sports infrastructure at the Bohunice campus will not only enhance the educational possibilities for the Faculty of Sports Studies but also serve for physical education classes for all students at Masaryk University and other activities promoting a healthy lifestyle, including potential collaboration with local sports clubs focused on children's and youth movement," said David Póč, Masaryk University's Treasurer, outlining one of the most anticipated investments. The estimated cost of the construction is 330 million CZK excluding VAT. "Students and the public can soon look forward to a detailed presentation of the entire sports complex, which will include outdoor sports facilities and a sports hall," he concluded.
The South Moravian Region plans 110 investment actions in 2025, with a total value of nearly 4 billion CZK, including VAT. Fourteen of these projects, valued at approximately 1.4 billion CZK, will be implemented directly by the region, while nearly 100 projects with a budget of 2.4 billion CZK are actions by regional contributory organizations. These investments cover a wide range of areas, including education, healthcare, social services, and sustainable energy. The goal of all projects is to develop key infrastructure and improve the quality of life for the region's residents.
Among the most significant regional projects are the extension of the Secondary School of Polytechnic Brno on Jílová Street for 440 million CZK, which will provide modern technical classrooms, and the construction of a new emergency response base for the Emergency Medical Services in Břeclav for 168 million CZK. The region is also intensively working in the area of sustainable energy – it plans to build 44 photovoltaic power plants on regional buildings, with implementation in multiple phases until 2030, at a total cost of 195 million CZK. There are also educational projects co-financed from the IROP, such as the extension of the Ibsenova kindergarten in Brno for children with special educational needs or the expansion of a primary and kindergarten school in Kyjov, Za Humny, focused on supporting inclusive education.
"Such an extensive investment plan confirms that the South Moravian Region is very active in infrastructure development. We are investing in education, healthcare, and social services, with a focus on the efficient use of public funds, sustainability, and inclusion," said David Grund, Regional Councilor for Investments.
Among the projects of contributory organizations are, for example, the reconstruction of the gynecological and obstetrics pavilion at Kyjov Hospital, the construction of the emergency department at Znojmo Hospital, or large educational projects such as the extension of the practical training hall at the Integrated Secondary Automotive School in Brno and the extension of the Secondary School of Electrical Engineering and Energy in Sokolnice.
Brno University of Technology (BUT) plans to carry out several significant investment projects in 2025. The reconstruction of the former military barracks in Údolní and Úvoz Streets, which involves six buildings used by the Faculty of Fine Arts at BUT since 2016, will begin. "The expected cost of the project is 450 million CZK excluding VAT. Work is expected to start in the summer of 2025, with completion in the spring of 2027. The university is also preparing the project documentation for the next phase of reconstruction and expansion, which will address the relocation of the Faculty of Architecture so that both of BUT's art-focused faculties will be located in one place," clarified Petr Marvan, Head of the Investment Department at the Rector's Office of BUT.
The gradual reconstruction of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering's buildings will continue, aiming to improve the teaching environment and expand the faculty library in building A4. "The building was constructed in the 1980s and has not undergone any changes except for the reconstruction of the outer shell. Therefore, significant upgrades to the ventilation systems, cooling, electrical installations, and regulation will be necessary," explained Petr Marvan. The estimated cost is 120 million CZK excluding VAT. The construction work is planned to take place between the summer of 2025 and the summer of 2026.
The building C3 of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will also undergo changes to create facilities for student clubs. The reconstruction of the so-called heavy laboratory hall will create a modern student center for university teams such as TU Brno Racing, BUT Chicken Wings, and Pneumobil Racing Team. "The existing spaces in the hall will be converted into individual workshops like in a traditional manufacturing plant or car workshop. These include a grinding shop, CNC machine shop, laminating room, engine workshop, and service area. The project also includes a simulator, educational center, and showroom," added Petr Marvan from BUT. The estimated cost is up to 30 million CZK excluding VAT. The funding for these projects will come from the state budget's property replacement program, the Operational Program Jan Amos Comenius, and the university's own resources.
