Brno University of Technology Helps Temelín Test Augmented Reality Glasses with Private 5G Network

The nuclear power plant Temelín is currently testing one of the most modern technologies – augmented reality (AR) glasses, which will significantly increase work efficiency. These glasses allow workers to conduct inspections without paper documents while providing operators in the control room with a real-time view of the equipment. A key factor for implementing this technology is the private 5G network, recently launched at Temelín by ČEZ in cooperation with Vodafone. The practical use of private 5G networks is also supported by Brno University of Technology.

The deployment of this technology is preceded by a long-term digitization process, during which key documents are converted into electronic form. Temelín workers can use AR glasses to view work procedures and technical schematics directly while working. The testing of the glasses thus represents another step towards modernization and higher efficiency. The management of ČEZ expects this innovation to primarily enhance work efficiency and strengthen the safety of the power plant. “This is one of the examples of extensive digitization that both nuclear power plants have been undergoing for many years. We are increasing our focus on safety, quality, and work efficiency, which is made possible by utilizing the latest technologies. And although we have a conservative approach, meaning we place maximum emphasis on safety, we don’t just want to follow current trends, we want to set them,” explains Bohdan Zronek, a member of the ČEZ board and director of the Nuclear Energy Division.

Brno University of Technology played a crucial role in implementing communication scenarios to verify the functionality of the installed private 5G network. This involved using augmented reality (AR) elements to guide workers in real-time or enabling time-critical multimedia calls with AR elements for remote worker instruction. The implemented scenarios bring improvements in work process efficiency and also increase cyber/physical security in ČEZ JETE’s premises. Brno University of Technology Rector Ladislav Janíček highlighted the collaboration with Vodafone, which led to the realization of this pioneering project. “We are very pleased that the long-term cooperation between Brno University of Technology and Vodafone contributed to the realization of a project that demonstrates the unique possibilities of private 5G networks in industry from both a telecommunications and cybersecurity perspective,” said Ladislav Janíček, Rector of Brno University of Technology.

At Brno University of Technology, the #VodafoneUniLab is operational, where it is possible, among other things, to test the behavior of smart devices or applications in 5G mobile networks, contributing to progress in industrial digitization.

The involvement of Brno University of Technology in this project demonstrates its key importance in the development of the latest technologies in industry and energy.

The South Bohemian power plant has become the first nuclear power plant in Europe with its own closed 5G network. Currently, nearly the entire power plant area, including part of the protective building around the reactor, is covered by the 5G signal. Energy technicians, in collaboration with Vodafone, will test another sixteen facilities. The final solution will depend on the outcome.

The private 5G network is the safest, fastest, and most efficient mobile data network capable of meeting the strictest industrial standards. It can have up to one hundred times the capacity of a 4G network. This allows more devices to be connected to the network and supports video calls and other demanding data streams. In terms of possible types of private networks, this is the highest level, which, in addition to the highest level of security, also brings high flexibility in configuration and customization according to customer requirements,” said Veronika Brázdilová, Vice President for Corporate Customers at Vodafone Czech Republic.
