Brno University of Technology has issued a declaration regulating the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools for education, creative activities, as well as administrative and operational areas. The university understands generative AI tools as technologies that can be useful solely as an assistive and consultative tool.

The declaration also affirms the importance of an open approach to the use of new technology, but also sets out principles and recommendations to guide it.

Among the main principles, in addition to defining AI as an assistive tool, we also find an emphasis on its use primarily to find solutions to improve quality of life, sustainability and current social needs.

The Declaration also sets out principles for the use of AI to protect copyright, privacy, trade secrets or compliance with the general ethical principles and principles contained in the Brno University of Technology's Code of Ethics.

In separate subsections, the document then addresses specific practical recommendations in three specific areas: education, creative activities and operational and administrative areas.

"BUT as a modern technical university follows the current world trends. These include the use of generative AI tools, one of the fastest growing areas with great potential, but also with some risks. The University's attitude towards these technologies is therefore open, but on the other hand limited by basic principles applicable to academics and other University employees. Personally, I believe that generative AI tools, if used properly and responsibly, can contribute positively to the university's operations and optimization of processes, as well as can add value to studying or performing research and artistic activities," said Kamil Gregorek, Chancellor of the BUT, commenting on the declaration.
