BUT scientists published in the journal Science

An article written by Professor Druckmüller’s team (Institute of Mathematics at BUT Faculty of Mechanical Engineering) regarding the discovery of unknown structures in solar corona caused by instabilities of plasma was mentioned in the Editor’s Choice of the journal Science. Newly discovered structures were found with the help of mathematical methods of digital image processing that have been developed in the last 10 years at the Institute of Mathematics. These structures, resembling the helix, bubbles or cigarette smoke have very small contrast. Their contrast is more than 300 times smaller than that of common structures observed in solar corona in visible light. These structures were first discovered on solar corona images  that were made from the data obtained during the total solar eclipse in 2008. Their existence was verified in all following total eclipses in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. Moreover they were found on newly processed images from 2001 and 2006. In cooperation with Professor Habbal (Institute of Astronomy, University of Hawaii), scientists managed to find out probable explanation of these structures.
