Following the recent Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 by Subject, another world-renowned comparison of universities in terms of their success in different disciplines has been published. The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by Shanghai Ranking offered a comparison of 55 disciplines this year. Brno University of Technology was ranked in four of them, in each case ranking first in the Czech Republic.

BUT achieved rankings in fields that in all cases fall into the category of engineering. The best position reached in the field of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, where it is together with the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague in the shared 201st-300th position, which means the highest position in the Czech Republic.

In the other three disciplines we can find the BUT as the only representative from the Czech Republic. In Mechanical Engineering and also in Energy Science & Engineering we find BUT in the 301st-400th position and in Electrical & Electronic Engineering in the 401st-500th position.

For comparison, in last year's ranking, BUT was not ranked at all in Mechanical Engineering and Energy Science & Engineering, and in the other two Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Nanoscience & Nanotechnology it was in the same 301st-400th position.

Among other Czech universities, 11 universities appeared in the ranking. The best-performing university was Charles University, which appeared in 20 ranked fields, Masaryk University was second with 13 rankings, and the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague was third with 7.

The overall winner of this year's ranking is Harvard University with 11 field first places, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with 5 first places, and the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago with two each. Hong Kong Polytechnic University has also won twice.

The Shanghai Industry Ranking has been published since 2017 and this year more than 1,900 universities from 104 countries made it to the final edition. It divides fields of study into five main categories: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. The categories are further subdivided into 55 disciplines. The engineering category contains the largest number of disciplines, 23 in total.

The most important parameter that determines whether an institution gets into the ranking at all is the publication of the results of scientific activities in impacted journals within the Web of Science database. In addition, the ranking is determined by the receipt of international awards, contributions to top international conferences, the quality of research and publications, and the international cooperation of the compared institutions.

As the Rector of the BUT, Ladislav Janíček, has already commented on the release of THE Rankings 2024 by Subject, although these international rankings of universities have an indicative function, it is important for the BUT to pay attention to them, "The position in these rankings is often a primary indicator when establishing strategic partnerships with universities abroad and has significant marketing and reference potential when presenting the university."
