On the project

A new plastic deformation mechanism combining twinning and kink band formation was recently described in the shape memory alloy NiTi and identified as the underlying plastic forming mechanism of B19' martensite. Combining the words twin and kink, the new mechanism was called kwinking and the new type of crystal defect kwink. The project aims to develop new kwinking mechanics in NiTi B19' martensite at different scales by combining specialized experimental methods for the analysis of martensitic microstructures and new theoretical approaches. The project can bring a number of valuable results, such as a detailed description of kwinks, including the conditions of their formation and interaction with other crystal defects, or extension of the theory of martensitic microstructures by crystal plasticity. At the same time, it can bring several practical insights that could help in the search for new shape memory alloys with suitable properties (such as ductility of the martensitic phase) or contribute to the improvement of NiTi-based alloys and the stability of their functional response.
