Comics - History and Present - winter

FaVU-KOHISO-ZAcad. year: 2013/2014

Series of lectures focused on specific means of expression of comics.
Lectures reflect:
1) Linear history of media (from the 19th century until the present time) with the samples of works by key authors
2) Critical reflection of comics (from the notes of Rudolp Topffer to present theoretic studies of Scott McCloud or Thierry Groensteen)

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Development of comics from the first comic strips in English humoristic journals to contemporary graphic novels.
Connections and relations between comics and animated cartoons, literature and fine arts.

Conditions for credit: 60% attendance in lectures.

Course curriculum

1) What is comics.
General characteristics of the medium and its definition.
Theoretic works on comics: Will Eisner, Comics and Sequentional Art
Scott McCloud, Understanding Comics
2) First comics.
From humoristic caricature to the first comic strips: (British caricature - T. Rowlandson, J. Tenniel. Journals like Punch, Ally Sloper etc. Comics of the first decade of the 20th century.
3) Comics and film.
Film animation and syntax in comics. Pioneers of animated film - Blackton, McCay, Disney. Comics as film model.
4) Manga and anime.
Japanese animators.
5) European and American comics in 1940s and 1950s.
