Department of Expertise in Mechanical Engineering, Analysis of Traffic Accidents and Vehicle Assessment
Teaching
The Department of Expertise in Mechanical Engineering, Analysis of Traffic Accidents and Vehicle Assessment provides courses taught at the IFE in the following areas:
- doctoral degree programme of Forensic Engineering;
- master’s degree programme of Forensic Engineering, Expert Engineering in Transport in the following subjects:
- Motor Vehicle Design;
- Analysis of Road Accidents I, II;
- Vehicle Testing;
- Computer Technology in Analysis of Road Accidents;
- courses in the specialization studies of technical expertise within the lifelong learning programme, particularly in the following subjects:
- Design and Lifetime Period of Motor Vehicles and their Testing;
- Diagnostics of Motor Vehicles and Machinery Maintenance Technology;
- Theory of Vehicles I;
- Valuation of Motor Vehicles and Machines;
- Computer Technology in Expert Professional Practice;
- Forensic Engineering including the methodology of finding;
- Methodology of an Expert Experiment, Data for Road Accident Analysis and their Management;
- Applied Mechanics;
- Theory of Road Vehicle Technical Analysis;
- Problematic Studies in Forensic Expertise in Engineering, Analysis of Road Accidents, and Motor Vehicle Valuation.
Employees of the Department of Expertise in Mechanical Engineering, Analysis of Traffic Accidents and Vehicle Assessment also teach the required optional courses for example at the BUT Faculty of Mechanical Engineering or at the Department of Automobile and Transport Engineering (the subject of Forensic Engineering).
Modern teaching methods are used with the support of computer technology.
Research and development
The department deals with road traffic safety using grants or cooperating directly with the industry.
Since 1st October 2010 the employees of the department have been participating in implementing the OP EC project called Modernization of Teaching in the Master’s degree programme of Forensic Engineering at BUT.
A significant part of research and development at the department is publication, especially in relation to analysis of road accidents and the technical condition of vehicles.
A significant contribution to the research and development in the field is made by the graduates of the doctoral programme through their dissertations and some students of the lifelong learning programme through their final work.
Forensic engineering activities
The BUT Institute of Forensic Engineering is listed in Section II of the list of institutions qualified for forensic engineering activities within Section 21 of Act No. 36/1967 Coll., on forensic experts and interpreters.
The employees of the department, among others, write complicated expert reports related to the following fields:
- Transport – Road and city transport – assessing the causes of road accidents.
- Economics – Property and motor vehicle prices and valuation, valuation of machines, equipment, and technological systems, valuation of movable property.
- Mechanical engineering – heavy and general engineering.
Consultancy
The department offers written or oral consultations to state authorities and professionals from the public. The employees give professional lectures, offer training courses and seminars, and participate in conferences.
Professional cooperation
The department cooperates closely with Škoda Auto a.s., the Institute of Forensic Engineering of University of Žilina, the European Association for Accident Research and Analysis (EVU), the Association of Czech Experts and Valuers (AZO), the Transport Research Centre (CDV), and others.
Furthermore, the department holds seminars on road accident analysis for forensic experts on transport.
