Department of Risk Engineering
The Department of Risk Engineering has a highly interdisciplinary focus and character following from the cooperation of the other BUT faculties participating in teaching the courses of the Risk Management in Technical and Financial Systems programme. Research and development is primarily focused on the methodology of risk analysis in technical and financial systems. Research, development, and innovation are carried out in cooperation with other BUT faculties, private professional workplaces or in the form of international cooperation with foreign institutions and universities.
Teaching
The Department of Risk Engineering was established at the BUT Institute of Forensic Engineering in 2010 following the accreditation of the Master’s degree programme N3950 – Risk Engineering. Based on the decision of the National Accreditation Institute, the programme was reaccredited in 2018 for the next 10 years as a Master’s degree programme called Risk Management in Technical and Financial Systems with two specializations - Risk Management in Technical Systems and Risk Management in Financial Systems. The programme has an interdisciplinary character, therefore several BUT constituent parts participate in its implementation. The Institute of Forensic Engineering is responsible for its organization.
The employees of the Department of Risk Engineering teach the following courses offered at the Institute:
- courses in the doctoral degree programme of Forensic Engineering;
- courses in the Master’s degree programmes:
- Risk management in technical and financial systems,
- Forensic engineering in transport,
- Information safety (Faculty of Electrical Engineering).
Research and development
The department is involved in research and development activities along with all the other faculties participating in the risk engineering programme. In addition, being responsible for the teaching in this programme, the Institute of Forensic Engineering has been granted the OP EC project called Modernization of Teaching in the Master’s degree programme of Forensic Engineering at BUT and the employees of the Department of Risk Engineering are also involved in its implementation.
The Institute of Forensic Engineering holds annually significant events such as the following:
- ExFoS - Expert Forensic Science, an international scientific conference of forensic engineering held annually in January
- JuFoS - Junior Forensic Science, a doctoral conference of forensic engineering held annually in April
All the students of the doctoral and Master’s degree programmes can participate actively.
All the students and employees are also involved in the following:
- grant calls issued annually by the University Development Fund
- development programmes
- specific university research
The employees of the Department of Risk Engineering also publish their scientific work, which is necessary for further scientific growth and to guarantee a high level of research and development and teaching. The published scientific work is included in the database published in RIV (the information register of R&D results), which provides quantitative and qualitative information about the character of the research and development publishing activities.
Providing expert reports and consultancy
One of the professional activities carried out at the Department of Risk Engineering involves providing on request consultancy in the field. The employees of the other BUT constituent parts who teach some courses in the degree programme of Risk Management in Technical and Financial Systems are also involved in these activities based on their focus and professional competence. This also applies to the forensic activities in which experts from the other BUT constituent parts participate as well.
Professional cooperation
The Department of Risk Engineering has a highly interdisciplinary focus and character following from the characteristics of the programme it is responsible for. It is based on cooperation with the following BUT faculties:
- Faculty of Civil Engineering (FCE)
- Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME)
- Faculty of Chemistry (FCH)
- Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication (FEEC)
- Faculty of Information Technology (FIT)
- Faculty of Business and Management (FBM)
