Since 2021, when BUT first appeared in the ranking, the number of engineering subjects in which it is represented has increased annually. Currently, it is represented in three more di than in the 2023 edition.

BUT achieved its best placement in this year's ranking in the subjects of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology and Telecommunication Engineering, ranking among the world's universities in the 201st–300th positions.

In the evaluation of Energy Science & Engineering, BUT ranks in the 301st–400th position. The same position was achieved in the ranking of Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

In these four rankings, BUT ranked the highest among Czech universities.

In addition to the mentioned subject of Telecommunication Engineering, the Brno university also appeared for the first time in three other subjects: Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, and Environmental Science & Engineering, each ranking in the 401st–500th positions.

Among other Czech universities, the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague, succeeded in the engineering field with four placements. Across all categories, Charles University has the most placements among Czech institutions – a total of 20. The overall winner of this year's ranking is Harvard University, with 14 subjects-specific first-place positions.

The ranking divides disciplines into five main fields: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. These fields are further divided into 55 subjects. The engineering sciences field contains the most subjects, a total of 23. The rankings for each subject only publish the top 500 institutions.

The Shanghai Ranking GRAS is considered one of the most important international rankings of universities and has been published annually since 2017. This year, the final edition included over 1,900 universities from 96 countries.

The ranking evaluates universities based on a range of criteria, including scientific outputs, international collaboration, and the quality of academic staff. In this year's edition, the existing methodology was revised, with some indicators being renamed or merged. The most significant change is the introduction of a new evaluation category, "World-Class Faculty," which includes four indicators focusing on the quality of academic staff.
