Brno University of Technology is placed 701th-800th in the ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities) for 2024, repeating last year's result when it jumped up 200 places. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the university has been recognized among the world's leading institutions.
Autor: Václav KoníčekSix Czech universities are featured in this year's ranking, with BUT advancing from 5th to 4th place among them. The top three spots are held by Charles University, Masaryk University, and Palacký University in Olomouc.
Although BUT's overall ranking remains the same as in 2023, the university has made strides in several key criteria. Notably, it achieved higher scores in the number of articles indexed in the prestigious Web of Science databases (Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index) and increased its publications in renowned journals such as Nature and Science.
ARWU also evaluates universities based on other factors such as the number of Highly Cited Researchers recognized by Clarivate's Institute for Scientific Information and the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal laureates affiliated with the institution. Additionally, a separate category assesses the weighted scores of these indicators relative to the number of academic staff at the university.
The ARWU ranking was first published in June 2003 by the Center for World Class Universities (CWCU), Graduate School of Education (formerly Institute of Higher Education) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, and is updated annually. Since 2009, the rankings have been published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, a higher education intelligence company that is not legally subordinate to any university or government agency. ARWU ranks more than 2,500 universities each year and the top 1,000 are published.
Last year ShanghaiRanking also published a global ranking of academic subjects – Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023, where BUT was ranked in four subjects, consistently securing the top position among Czech universities.
