New THE university ranking confirmed the strength of BUT in industrial cooperation

In the new edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE), Brno University of Technology has defended last year's 1001st to 1200th place and at the same time, according to THE, has taken the position of the best technical university in the Czech Republic in the overall score.

BUT has improved in the partial metrics of teaching, internationalisation and especially in the area of cooperation with industry, where it scores the best among all Czech universities. In the latter area, BUT has long been among the most highly ranked domestic universities.

The result of BUT is also valuable in terms of the year-on-year increase in the total number of ranked institutions. Compared to last year's 1,904 universities from 108 countries, this year more than 2,000 universities from 115 countries took part in the THE evaluation.

"It is gratifying that the results of THE also confirm our targeted active cooperation with industrial partners, both in the areas of education and research. We are thinking about the future position and competitiveness of the Czech Republic when, in cooperation with industrial partners , we are looking for ways to address the declining interest in studying technical and natural sciences at universities and in Czech school system in general. It is on the basis of cooperation with industry that we have built our competitive position as a modern technical university and a beneficial research organisation. Thanks to this, we have taken leading positions not only in the Czech Republic in a number of technological areas. We were at the birth of industrial clusters, especially in the semiconductor, battery and space sectors. In cooperation with our industrial partners, we operate technology competence centres and support knowledge transfer, entrepreneurship and the establishment of spin-off and start-up companies. We strive to be a worthy, respected and beneficial partner of the Czech industry both in the field of student education to provide much needed graduates in technical and scientific fields, as well as in the field of research, innovation and transfer of their results into industrial or business practice. This is how we understand our mission and vision of a modern European technical university," said Ladislav Janíček, Rector of BUT.

"In all prestigious global rankings such as QS, ARWU and THE, the university has been able to continuously strengthen its ranking. This is mainly due to our academic and research staff, their skills and the results they achieve, our students who actively contribute to building the image of their university, our alumni, all our partners and of course the leadership of our faculties and institutes at all levels of management. They deserve a big thank you, because these placements are a good reflection of their work," the Rector added about the new results. More about the ranking methodology on THE's website.

THE ranking, which was first published independently in 2010, is one of the three most important global university rankings. It evaluates universities on criteria including scientific, research and development potential, the quality of education, the international dimension of the institution and the transfer of knowledge to industry. The rankings are based on data from the international bibliographic database Scopus, information collected from institutions and research organisations, as well as surveys conducted in the international academic community.

In addition to the World University Rankings, which focuses on the overall ranking of universities, THE has since 2011 also focused on subject rankings, which compare the performance of higher education institutions in eleven separate subject groups. Last year, BUT performed best in engineering, economics and computer science.
