Basic Elements of PC

The course focuses especially on the following topics: Historical development of operating systems, Windows XP operating system (user environment, basic configuration of the system, work with objects, basic software). Fundamentals of computer networks. Computer hardware. Main Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, FrontPage). Common functions of Microsoft Office and interconnection of applications

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will acquire basic knowledge of computer hardware and software including up-to-date trends in IT development. They will master the basic principles of and skills in the work with a file system, text and spreadsheet processor, electronic mail processing, Internet access and basic skills necessary for web pages creation. They will learn how to use Microsoft Office applications including more sophisticated techniques, how to eliminate problems, and will be made familiar with the internal mechanism of MS Office.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of informatics at secondary school level.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions for awarding the course-unit credit:
1.Active participation in the exercises and control of elaborated partial tasks in three pre-set deadlines – max. 85 points. 2.Presentation of semester work – max 15 points. 3. Total number of points for awarding the course-unit credit has to be higher than 50
Conditions for passing an exam: Knowledge of taught topics and its practical application.
Form of examination: Combined – a written test on theoretical topics and practical solution of the assigned task.

Aims

The main objective of the course is for students to master the theoretical knowledge of and practical skills in the sphere of computer software. Students will learn how to use individual applications and their mutual cooperation, and how to solve problems resulting from a complex software structure.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Control of results of independent work on the assigned tasks. In case of excused absence from seminars, the teacher can set an additional condition if appropriate, usually elaboration of supplementary task.
