The Art and Civilization of France (conversation) - summer

The course is structured along discussions in which students will be encouraged to find parallels and specifics of French culture and civilization, and to learn about individual and general features of French art and life as such. The students' study disciplines and interests will be taken into account.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After attending the course, students should achieve better orientation both in popular and academic texts, express themselves about things they had read and seen, make comments and write reviews, present, defend, or criticize artworks, cultural processes and civilization procedures. They should deepen their of reflection of their position in time and space.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations..

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

In the summer semester, both the topic of the oral exam (longer - 20 minutes) and the way of presentation is a matter of choice of each studetn. In order to obtain the credit for the course, students will have to submit thirteen written assignments during the semester and speak comprehensively about the chosen topic during the exam.

Aims

The course attempts at mapping the contemporary state of French culture and civilization, taking into account the concrete art orientation of particular students. Rather than acquiring a superficial overview, we will focus more profoundly on one author, one work of art, one exhibition, etc, and will also strive to find possible paralells with Czech culture and society.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

After each lesson, students will write an essay inspired by the topic discussed in the class; at most times, they will attempt at answering questions posed during the lessons.
