Chemistry and technology of water.

Chemical and physical characteristics of natural, underground, surface, and waste water, resp.
Important chemical and biological processes running in aqueous environment, rules of growth of microorganisms, basic life conditions, classification of microorganisms due to energy and carbon sources.
Technologies of drinking water production, coagulation, filtration, disinfection, aggressive carbon dioxide removal, iron and manganese removal, adsorption, calcium and magnesium removal, ion-exchangers.
Mechanical and biological ways of sewage treatment, aerobic methods of sewage treatment, activated sludge process, biofilm reactors, natural ways of wastewater treatment, removal of nutrients from wastewater using biological and chemical methods.
Sewage sludge production, its stabilization, particularly by anaerobic process, and its further treatment.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Student will master the aim of the subject, i.e. essentials of hydrochemistry, basics of waterworks technologies, sewage treatment processes, and treatment of sludge.

Prerequisites

Basics of general, inorganic and organic chemistry in extent of subject BC01.

1. Physical properties of water, chemical equilibria in water, characteristics of water composition
2. Macro- and microcomponents of natural water, gases, corresponding legislature
3. pH, neutralization capacity, carbon, calcium-carbonate equilibrium, aggressive carbon dioxide removal
4. Iron, manganese, and their removal from water
5. Coagulation
6. Filtration, adsorption
7. Disinfection of water
8. Ion-exchngers, water hardness and its removal
9. Life conditions of microorganisms, biochemical processes in water
10. Wastewater, scheme of wastewater treatment plant, quality of treated water
11. Activated sludge process, sedimentation
12. Aeration, biofilm reactors, natural ways of wastewater treatment. Anaerobic processes, sewage sludge treatment
13. Removal of nutrients from wastewater
