Course detail

Computer Aided Building Physics (S-PST)

FAST-CH03Acad. year: 2010/2011

Practical utilization of software in the field of building physics by elaboration of project and appreciation of constructions and buildings in terms of project documentation in sequence on binding requirements of valid legislation. It act above all about designing and checking of the thermal comfort of environment, thermal-technical characteristics of constructions and buildings. Selection optimalization of constructions from in light of acoustics and daylighting. Knowledge and ability enable utilization of pertinent softwares in the field of building physics and optimal selection of materials and project of construction. It spurs and overrun possibilities of future projector. On theoretic solving will tie together practical checking of the thermal-technical, acoustics and light-technical characteristics with form of measuring in situ and resulting evaluation of measuring results.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

By attending the course the students will learn how to properly design building structures by eliminating the sources of failures and defects with the means of computer simulation programs. They will be taught how to design buildings with low-energy demands meeting the thermal indoor comfort conditions, together with the correct utilization of solar gains through openings which also satisfy the requirements given by the standards and regulations of daylighting design.

Prerequisites

Theoretical knowledge from the area of thermal physics and daylighting of building including computational procedures. Knowledge of material properties and designs of structure details. Basic knowledge of valid legislation.

Co-requisites

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Requirements for successful completion of the subject are specified by guarantor’s regulation updated for every academic year.

Course curriculum

1. Functional requirements on the thermal protection of buildings, energy legislation.
2. Practical use of software for building physics with a solution of one-dimensional temperature field at the unsteady thermal state.
3.-4. Computer simulation and assessment of details by means of two-dimensional temperature field
5.-6. Thermal stability of a room – an assessment of a critical room from a point of view of a maximal increase of temperature and a maximal summer temperature
7. Building energy characteristic of a building.
8. Writing up a document as a proof of low energy demands and thermal protection of buildings (an annexe of the documentation needed for the building permit).
9. Functional requirements in the field of daylighting and insolation of buildings.
10. Daylight factor assessment.
11. Functional acoustic requirements.
12. – 13. Verification of a design suitability of constructions including void infill elements from the building physics point of view (overall conception of a building and an individual construction – optimisation of requirements from a point of view of the thermal building physics, acoustics, daylighting and insolation of buildings).

Work placements

Not applicable.

Aims

Students will gain skills that permit a deeper understanding of multimedia issues in terms of construction design, thermal fault elimination and ensuring low energy consumption of buildings. A part of the course will be an optimisation of void infill elements from a point of view of thermal comfort of a room, interior daylighting and insolation.
