The B1 (or Threshold) level BY51 exam is an INTERMEDIATE LEVEL exam which requires a student to:
generally understand information about familiar topics and situations, such as those met at work, in school, in free time etc. providing they are expressed in a clear and straightforward manner.
be able to use English to communicate successfully in most situations encountered when travelling abroad.
be able to create a simple connected text with a simple context.
be able to describe experiences and events, ambitions, hopes and plans, and to briefly explain or justify their ideas and statements.
successfully complete intermediate level grammar exercises.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will improve their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary at Intermediate level and acquire reading, writing, listening and speaking skills required for the BY51 English exam which is an exam to assess the B1 level of the CEF (Common European Framework) established by the Council of Europe.

Prerequisites

Students should be able to: use the past and present (including present perfect) tenses to talk about their lives, experience and opinions; use future forms to discuss plans and make appointments, predictions; compare things using adjectives, adverbs and quantifiers, articles and countable/uncountable nouns; use modals to express permission and obligation in connection with rules and behaviour; passives as typically used to describe processes, origins and materials; conditionals to speculate about possible future situations and general theoretical ones; discuss relationships, the family, flat-sharing, daily routines, food, sleep, education, work; ask questions, give personal information, understand clear English related to familiar subjects; manage functional transactions in shops, restaurants and while travelling abroad, such as attending language schools, checking information, apologising, requesting and asking permission.

Course curriculum

Course book: New English File Intermediate, by C.Oxenden and C. Latham-Koenig, Oxford, used for the first semester (BYA5) and part of the second (BYA6).

It is important that students study 3 weeks of exam skills before they finish their course. Therefore, if the credit test is moved to week 12, they should start their exam practice in WEEK 9!

Aims

The aim of this course is to aid students in preparing for the BY51 English exam which is an exam to assess if Master’s students have reached the B1 level of the CEF (Common European Framework) established by the Council of Europe. For a brief summary of what is involved in the B1 level of English see the Anotace. BYA6 provides preparation for the exam by practicing exam task types in the areas of listening, speaking, writing, reading and grammar. It also covers elements of more advanced grammar to help students progress beyond what they have studied in BYA5, improve or revise their abilities in grammar and communicative skills, and build on their vocabulary.
The lessons in the first part of the BYA6 course will be similar in form to those for courses BYA1 – BYA5. The credit test at the end of the semester will also be similar to the BYA5 credit test, aimed at testing what students have learned during the course.
Target level according to the CEFR is B1.
