Specialization: Movement Activities by Health Limitations

The subject provides an overview of the specific physical needs and limits of an organism weakend by a disease, an injury, by a surgery, by an inborn handicap etc. in terms of physical activities. The syllabus of the subject covers the theoretical as well as practical classes held in specialized facilities offering adapted physical activities to a people with specific physical needs. There, studets will have an opportunity to experience some of these adapted physical activities in person.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be able to assess in what way and into what degree an individual becomes limited by the effect of and injury, of a disease, a surgery etc. from the perspective of physical activity. Students will be able to suggest a suitable alternative physical activity, or such a change of the activity, so that the individual feels comfortable doing this physical activity, in terms of his or her physical, psychical, social, and economical sources. If needed, the students will be able to recommend to see further specialist (a doctor, a physiotherapist, a podiatrist, an ergotherapist, a nutrition specialilst, a psychologist, a social worker, and others) to make further assessments and examinations.

Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, introduction to sport medicine, traumatology, gerontolgy, and physical education studies

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Credit:
Form of the examination and the final classification of the subject:
1. active attendance of practical classes
2. 5-minute oral presentation on any topic that was covered by the subject or any related topic

Course curriculum

- The term 'Sport for all' and its mission. Performance and enjoyment.
- Kinds of health deficit. Forms of remedial physical education and sports for all.
- The specifics of the individual forms, their adaptation to those with weaker health.
- Methodology of working with people with weaker health.
- Exercise with one's own body and with equipment: large balls, exercises for a healthy back, Body and mind - Pilates, power yoga, stretching and relaxation, exercising on a balance platform, on Bossa, with Flexi bars, with rubber adapters and rubber bands.
- Exercise at a fitness centre.
- Indoor cycling and Cardio fitness exercises on aerobic training machines - Concept 2 rowing training machines, orbitreks, stationary bikes, bicycle ergometers, steppers, treadmills.
- Nordic walking.
- Swimming for health and fitness. Aqua fitness and aqua gymnastics - movement activities in the water.

- Practical tuition - suitable kinds of sporting activities according to the individual's current state of health, activities for active lifestyle programmes for members of the population suffering from health limitations.

Aims

The aim of the subjectis to provide an overveiw of the possibilities to continue physical activity or to take up physical activity in the situation of acquired health limitation. The subject covers the organization of the sport events dedicated to adapted physical activities and the coaching adapted physical activites.
