State Examination Seminar

The State Final Examination Seminar (SZZ) serves to coordinate the preparation of students for the State Final Examination. In the initial part of the semester, several joint classes are held - then seminar groups are formed, usually led by faculty members of the Department of Theory and History of Art. The design of the SZZ in the Fine Arts degree programme requires students to select one question from each of the two strands (1. Art History and Theory, 2. Media and Technologies of the Visual Arts) in advance. In the SZZ Seminar, under the guidance of their assigned consultants, students will first clarify their choice of the two questions and then develop a thesis for each selected question. The theses are the output of the seminar. It is a brief document (maximum 5 standard pages) that specifies the students' sub-individual focus within the broadly formulated question. In the theses, learners specify which aspects, subtopics and issues of the chosen issue they want to focus on in the debate at the SZZ. Formally, the theses take the form of a clearly structured text supplemented by a list of selected study literature and other sources.

Entry knowledge

Orientation in aesthetics, theory and art history at the level of learning outcomes of the core theory courses.

 

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Credit is awarded based on sufficient attendance and submission of the required pair of theses.

 

Teaching takes place in the classrooms of the FFA BUT in the hours determined by the schedule. Attendance is compulsory (3 unexcused absences allowed).

 

Aims

The aim of the course is to coordinate the preparation of students for the theoretical part of the state final examination and to provide them with methodological guidance and support in the preparation of theses, which are the output of the course and at the same time the basis for the exam committee.

 

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • identify partial topics in the thematic breadth of the state exam questions;
  • independently search the study literature and other sources for selected partial topics;
  • independently develop theses that serve as a basis for the preparation and subsequent debate in the state examination.

Syllabus

  1. introducing the students to the nature of the state final examination and a basic introduction to the questions from both areas of the SZZ;
  2. division into seminar groups;
  3. working together in seminar groups - narrowing the breadth of the state examination questions towards individual perspectives, identifying appropriate study literature and other resources; 
  4. individual work (based on consultation) towards finalisation of theses.
