Laboratory Classes in Chemistry

Laboratory code and safety measures. Basic laboratory work - weighing, work with glass, measuring volumes of liquids, filtration, heating, cooling, dehydrating, distillation, crystallization, annealing, decanting. Determination of physical variables - melting point, density, pH. Simple tasks - fraction crystallization, preparation of the solutions with accurate concentrations, gas preparation.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Obtaining skills and a practical knowledge of basic operations that are used in the chemical laboratory.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic operations that are used in chemical laboratory is evaluated.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The laboratory notebook (control of preparation), report sheets, tests, course-unit credit test.

Course curriculum

. Introduction - laboratory safety and guidelines, laboratory notes. Laboratory equipment, weighing, work with glass. Measuring volumes of liquids, volumetric glass.
2. Preparation of solutions with accurate concentrations. Filtration - gravity and vacuum filtration.
(Test - laboratory safety and guidelines.)
3. Saturated solution, solubility curve, cooling. Filtration (Büchner funnel), decanting, dehydrating.
(Test - laboratory equipment.)
4. Heating, evaporation, crystallization - types. Titration - byrettes, pH measuring.
5. Distillation - coolers, determination of density. Gas preparation in the laboratory.
6. Annealing, determination of the melting point. Fraction crystallization of mixture potassium dichromate and sodium chloride.
7. Course-unit credit test.
8. Course-unit credit.

The target of the course is a fast and necessary unification of levels of practical and laboratory knowledge of the starting students - chemists.
