Chemistry I

The aim of the course is focused on increasing the knowladge of general, physical, inorganical and organical chemistry for understanding connection between structure and character of matters together with groung of the theory of chemical thermodynamics, reaction kinetics and electrochemistry, important chemical productions and raw material treatment.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Basic knowledge of general, inorganic and organic chemistry for consequent training in material science and other scientific disciplines.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of chemistry in the range of secondary technical school.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Course curriculum

Matter and energy. Elements and compounds. The laws of chemical changes.
Composition and structure of chemical compounds: atoms, molecules and ions.
Chemical reactions: stoichiometry and chemical kinetics.
Energy and thermochemistry. Thermodynamics.
State of matter: gases, liquids, solids.
Dispersion systems. Solutions.
Electrochemistry. Galvanic cells. Corrosion.
Selected chapter of anorganic chemistry: nonmetals, metals. Important chemical productions.
Properties, production and usage of metals.
Selected chapter of organic chemistry.
Production, properties and usage of plastics and composite materials.
Chemistry and environment.
