Photography 1 - summer

The course acquaints students with the practical use of black and white, colour and digital photography. It introduces them to the basics of lighting technology and leads them towards the handling of photographic process from negatives to positives. It teaches them to select a suitable photographic material and appropriate technology for their creative purpose.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students are able to orientate themselves in the whole area of classical and digital photography. They practically manage to document their artworks and use photography within their own studio specialization.

Prerequisites

On the basis of acquired knowledge (technical and technological basics of photography), students are practically able to manage the work with the classical and digital photo camera, as well as to document a work of art in interior and exterior.

Classified credit on the basis of the assigned task. The series of four black and white photographs of a statue in the exterior.

Aims

Getting acquainted with B/W positive and negative materials. Orientation in domestic offer for colour reversal and negative materials. Acquiring theoretical knowledge necessary to master the B/W photographic negative-to-positive process. Basic knowledge of cameras, ability to choose a camera to suit photographer's intention. Theoretical introduction to digital photography. Work in the darkroom without the photographic negative - photogram.

Acquiring the practical knowledge necessary to master the B/W negative-to-positive process, learning the skills to be able to use the process in one's own work. Getting acquainted with the basic principles of illumination (work with daylight, artificial light, basics of the work with flash equipment). Basic skills in reproducing flat copies. Basic principles of photographing 3-D objects and plastic art, glassware, jewellery etc. Documentation of a 2-D and 3-D work of art of students' choice (both in interior and exterior). Practical introduction to digital photography.
Final project: a set of B/W photographs (theme assigned by the teacher).
