Art history Pro-Seminar

The seminar will lead the students into their theoretical studies and will focus on the differences between secondary school and academic approach. The students will be made aware about the context of teh faculty, of the city of Brno, the region, and Czech and international art. Students wil be presented various databases, both printed and computerized ones. The students will present a paper on a particular theoretical topic, which they support by the presentation of a structured database. They will be preparing for the History of Art exam; taking a blindfold test (which will consist of identifying the context and interpreting a previously unknown visual material) will part of this process.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students will present a paper based on a structured visual database. The paper will focus either on the personality and work of a contemporary visual artist, or on an artist teaching or having taught on FavU.

Prerequisites

High school level of knowledge from the history, literature, arts.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Students will present a paper; a complex verbal and visual presentation, using a structured visual database, will be evaluated. Students must take part in the discussions.

Course curriculum

1. The context of the FaVU, its tutors, graduates, the Brno cultural milieu, its traditions and its context (papers).
2. Visiting the permanent exposition of visual art in Moravian Gallery during the seminar.
3. Topical information about importatn events on the artistic scene.
4. Blindfold tests: the students will attempt to contextualize and interpret unnown visual data.

Aims

The main objectives of the seminar emphasise the transition from high-school conception of education, understood on a comprehensive basis, to the development of their own individuality, the ability to reflect their social environment, to critical approach both to works of art and to specialized and journalistic texts. The students must learn to quickly, efficiently, and critically look up relevant visual and textual information essential for their studies. They will present the found information by writing an essay and oral presentation of a paper, by a structured visual database. The form of both presentations will be evaluated. Students will learn to take part in academic discussion.
