Course curriculum

The principles and design of medical diagnostic devices for scanning of electric signals from the body surface.
The principles and design of medical diagnostic devices for scanning of basic non-electric signals.
Diagnostic systems using light radiation for acquisition.

To provide a fundamental knowledge of the design and operation of diagnostic devices used in medicine and in medical laboratories.

Syllabus

1. Recording electrodes, polarization of electrodes, influence on measured signal.
2. Amplifiers for biological signals, requirements and design.
3. Transducers for non-electric signal in medical device.
4. Electrocardiograph, principle of operation and parameters of the device.
5. Electroencelophalography, EEG characteristics, the principle and parameters of the apparatus, methods of recording and evaluating brain signals, photostimulator, phonostimulator.
6. Other biological electric signals - electromyograph, electroretinogram, electrooculogram.
7. Pletysmography.
8. Temperature measurement - principles, applications.
9. Blood pressure measurement, invasive and non-invasive measurement, the principles of employed methods.
10. Devices for measurement of breathing, apnea alarm, breath volumes.
11. Devices for blood flow measurement.
12. The principles of monitoring techniques, operation of monitors and their connection to hospital information system.
13. Diagnosis of eye disorders - intraocular pressure, ultrasound biometry, perimeter.

Syllabus

1. Introduction to LabView, demonstration of applications, applications in medical diagnostics
2. Basic mathematical operations in LabView and creating of the first application
3. LabView - work with files, the ECG signal, noise simulation
4. LabView -biological signal filtering, spectral analysis
5. LabView - exploitation of external inputs and outputs in biological signal processing.
5. LabView - R wave detection in ECG signal I, individual work
7. LabView - R wave detection in ECG signal II, individual work
8. LabView - R wave detection in ECG signal III, individual work
9. Frequency characteristic measurement with signal generator and oscilloscope. Simple RC circuit.
10. Frequency characteristic measurement with LabView and measurement card. Simple RC circuit.
11. Analog bandstop filter for power noise suppression - frequency characteristic.
