Digital Television and Radio Systems

Fundamentals of transmission and broadcasting of digital television signals. Digitization of picture and sound - recommendation CCIR and ITU-R. Methods and standards of static and dynamic image compression. MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC and H.264 standard features and overview. Digital transmission signal protection, forward error correction FEC principles. Digital modulation used in DTV systems (M-PSK, M-QAM, multiplex OFDM). Satellite DVB-S/S2, cable DVB-C/C2 and terrestrial DVB-T/T2 standard. Standard for mobile transmission DVB-H/SH. Digital television receivers (set-top boxes) for DVB-T. Transmitters for DVB-T, SFN and MFN networks and distribution, program multiplex. Picture quality evaluation during the DVB transmission and picture quality metrics. Interactive and data services of the DTV - Multimedia Home Platform, electronic guide EPG, Java VM and applications.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students become familiar with selected digital television systems used at present time in TV techiques area and their development in the nearest future.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the Bachelor´s degree level is requested.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Requirements for completion of a course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every year. Laboratory mesurements is evaluated with 30 point. Final exam with 70 points. Maximum is 100 points.

Course curriculum

Lectures:
1. Fundamentals of transmission and broadcasting of digital television signals.
2. Digitization of picture and sound - recommendation CCIR and ITU-R.
3. Methods and standards of static and dynamic pictures compression. MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC and H.264 standard features and overview.
4. Digital transmission signal protection, forward error correction FEC principles.
5. Digital modulation used in DTV systems (M-PSK, M-QAM, multiplex OFDM).
6. Satellite broadcasting standard DVB-S/S2.
7. Cable broadcasting standard DVB-C/C2.
8. Terrestrial broadcasting standard DVB-T/T2.
9. Standard for mobile transmission DVB-H/SH.
10. Digital television receivers (set-top boxes) for DVB-T.
11. Transmitters for DVB-T, SFN and MFN networks and distribution, program multiplex.
12. Picture quality evaluation during the DVB transmission and picture quality metrics.

Laboratory exercise:
1. ADC and DAC encoder and decoder of the digital video signal into the parallel form.
2. MPEG-2 source encoder and FEC channel encoder of the digital video signal.
3. DVB-T receiver (set-top box) and MHP applications.
4. Measurements of the DVB-T signals and multiplex A.
5. Measurements of the DVB-S signals and packet CS link.
6. MPEG-2 TS channel converter from the DVB-S to DVB-C.
7. Generator and analyzer MPEG-2 TS and DVB-T test transmitter.
8. MPEG-2 TS picture quality measurements in the DVB-T real broadcasting.
