Mobile Communication Systems

Description and technical solution of the wireless and mobile communication systems. Wideband Area Networks (IEEE 802.20, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS), Metropolitan Area Networks (IEEE 802.16), Local Area Networks (IEEE 802.11), Personal Area Networks (IEEE 802.15). The future of mobile communications.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students become familiar with the conception and function of mobile communication systems used at present time in Czech republic and world-wide. They obtain also review about development of mobile communication systems in the near future.

The subject knowledge on the Bachelor´s degree level is requested.

Aims

The aim of the course is to introduce students with the conception and function of mobile communication systems used at present time in Czech republic and world-wide and suggest tendencies for mobile communications in the near future.

Basic conception and function of radio communication systems, general block diagram of radio communication system, system distribution.
Radio telephone system GSM - introduction, frequency bands, power levels.
Radio telephone system GSM - signal processing.
Radio telephone system GSM - architecture.
Radio telephone system GSM - security management.
Radio telephone system GSM - data transmission (GPRS, HSCSD), particularities of GSM 1800 system.
Testing og radio telephone network GSM, radio communication testers, TEMS programme.
Radio telephone system IS 95, signal processing for different direction of transmission, traffic and control channels.
Cordless telephone systems, introduction, CT2, CT3, DECT.
Radio paging, RDS and ERMES systems.
3G systems UMTS, IMT 2000. Bit rate, frequency bands, radio interface UTRA, system architecture.
Bluetooth system, description, signal processing. The future of mobile communications.

Laboratory exercise

Testing of GSM mobile station. Data transmission in GSM network. Testing of DECT cordless telephone. Parameter changes of GSM network.
Frequency Hopping of GSM system. Voltage Control Oscillator. Phase Locked Loop in mobile station
GSM repeater.
The visit to radiomobile exchange T-Mobile network (BTS, BSC, MSC, frequency planing centre, measurement technique).
