Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course familiarises students with the process of checking and measuring of production machines. The objective of the course is to acquaint students with the theory and methods of measurements and application of these methods to verification of production machine accuracy.

Prerequisites

Basics of statistical data processing, basic construction nodes and elements of production machines, basic knowledge from the area of measuring of technical parameters (strength, length etc.) and processing of their results.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit is conditional on 100% attendance at laboratory practicals and approved reports. Examination has a written and an oral part and tests student’s knowledge and his/her ability to apply it in practice.

Aims

The course “Checking and Measuring of Production Machines” enables students to acquire knowledge of the ways of measurement performance in production machines. Students will be made familiar with fundamental terms from the area of metrology, and will have a grasp of the measurement theory and principles of geometrical and working accuracy checking of production machines.

Missed lessons may be compensated for by attending a laboratory practical with another study group.

Syllabus

1. Classification of measurements and measuring methods. Basic terms from the field of metrology.
2. Fundamentals of measurement theory – measurement errors, basic statistical parameters for estimation of the measured value and measurement accuracy.
3. Equipment for change and clamping of instruments and workpieces. Holding, lubricating and cooling devices used with production machines. Transport of chips. Review of checked parameters.
4. Production machine accuracy check. Review of main factors determining the accuracy of production machines.
5. Verification of geometrical accuracy of production machines - definitions. Quantities determining the geometric accuracy of production machines.
6. Measurement of surface shape and movement deviations (straightness, planeness, directness, etc.)
7. Spindle run accuracy: measured quantities, measuring equipment.
8. Interpolate trajectory accuracy check: measurement procedure.
9. Working accuracy of production machines - basic factors, principle of measurement – example.
10.Stiffness of production machines. Basic terms. Characteristic features of stiffness. Principle of measurement (examples). Used measuring equipment.
11.Measurements of dynamical stability of production machines. Oscillation. Sources and types of oscillation. Measured quantities.
12.Useful power. Resistance to self-oscillation.
13.Experimental examination of frame deformation using model technology.

Syllabus

Lessons are organised in modules of 4 hours every 2 weeks.
1. Measurement of functional surface roughness in production machines. Checking of straightness of machine guiding surface and directness of movement by length-measurement method.
2. Workshop methods of measuring of straightness and planeness of machine functional surfaces. Checking of straightness of guiding surfaces by angle-measurement methods.
3. Checking of deviations in mutual position of functional surfaces. Accuracy check of screw - bolt and nut rise
4. Checking of geometrical accuracy of a turning machine
5. Accuracy check of machine tool positioning.
6. Introduction to work with coordinate measurement machine.
7. Checking of reports + course-unit credit awarding.
