Ecology of Industry

The course is concerned with classification of activities in engineering and metallurgy according to the effect on the environment and possibilities of elimination. Using knowledge for the feedback when developing technologies. Preference of the sustainable growth approach.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course provides students with assumptions for the development of engineering creativity on the base of sustainable growth approach with a maximizing the knowledge from waste technology related to health problems of individuals and the society.

Prerequisites

Knowledge on the level of the first three semesters of the study at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is assumed.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit requirements: Attendance at seminars, working out a semester paper -report from excursion or a make-up topic from lectures.

Aims

The course objective is to relate technical thinking, management technology, manufacturing quality and waste management. The environmental impact of the products and technology, especially after the end of the products’ lifespan is also considered.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Obligatory attendance of students is only related to the training, where the presence of students will be recorded. An absent student will be obliged to write a paper on an assigned topic.

1. Introduction into the theory of environmental conservation.
2. Primary parameters of biosphere, their specification.
3 Development and causes adverse effect of performance and consumption on environment.
4. Adverse effect in the agriculture on slash-grain wood, soil and waters, atmosphere.
5. Adverse effect of activities industrial line in division according to measurement interference..
6. Adverse effect of transport and others sectors of economy.
7. Adverse effect consumer sphere.
8. Utilization of renewable energy supply, especially biomass.
9. Manners and arrangement of wastes (separating plant, incinerator, dump, compost).
10. Run-down of legislation on section of environment.
11. Brief of timeline activities and conference pointing conscious in the environment (permanent source sustainable).
12. Tools of practical application on environmental (environmental audit, rate influence of environment).
13. Methods EMS, EMAS, ISO, progress according to IPPC.
