European Practice in Risk Management

FSI-XERAcad. year: 2009/2010

European practice in risk management in major accident domain is established on the knowledge from real industrial accidents and on the experience from implementation of such systems in EU countries. Risk management is based on the system approach to the solution of the complex identification task. The basic and first step is selection of such a risk sources, which influent risk level in the establishment. Significant step is identification of the accident and frequency of hazardous events estimation. The consequences estimation is based on application of verified models for loss of containment events, modelling of the source term and dispersion and modelling of the exposure and damage. The estimation of the individual and societal risks in establishment are results needed for the risk evaluation.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Understanding of a general risk management principle applicable in industry, from risk sources selection to risk assessment and risk management. A modified general principles can be used for the risk management in a related industres.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge from the quality management, an uncertainty assessment in the technical practice,(probability of a phenomenon, frequency and intensity of failures), risk matrix.

Co-requisites

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The necessary condition is activity an presentation on seminars, simple case studies, the semestr checking test.

Aims

The main goal of the subject is creation of the system used in risk management domain in industry. Today risk management system is built up on the experience and knowledge from major accidents in such industrial establishments in EU, where are located dangerous substances. The logical construction of the risk management system applied is EU based on the major risk sources selection, hazard identification, individual and societal risk assessment is generaly aplicable.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

In a quite exceptional cases possible a simple individual case study focused on the risk management system.
