Course detail

Building Constructions I

FAST-BH52Acad. year: 2009/2010

Structural systems of multi-story buildings: - wall systems, load-bearing brick walls (masonry), openings in load-bearing walls, - monolithic skeleton systems, - combined skeleton and wall systems. Structural systems of high buildings and superstructures – design principles, material possibilities. Floor structures - function, general requirements, connection with vertical load-bearing walls. Floor structure types: wooden, monolithical reinforced concrete, ceramic, steel, combined floor structures.Recessed structures. Chimneys - chimney and ventilaton flues. Non-load-bearing structures -requirements, material and structural variations.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The knowledge from the subject are focused on the structural
principles and own structures with materials application. Student
will be able to prepare basic design of building concept.

Prerequisites

Technical terminology, basic requirements to various types of building (functional, structural and architectural), basic knowledge about constructional systems, competence to choice of system commensurate with type of building, spatial stiffness provision of constructional system. Drawing knowledge of basic constructional types, competence of building drawings reading.

Co-requisites

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Requirements for successful completion of the subject are specified by guarantor’s regulation updated for every academic year.

Course curriculum

1. – 4. Structural systems of multi-story buildings: wall systems. Vertical load-bearing walls – functional, structural, material requirements. Load-bearing brick walls: Brick masonry (material, brick masonry boundings, mortars, load-bearing capacity, creep and settlement of masonries. Block masonry (material, properties, use). Stone masonry, mixed masonry. Openings in load-bearing walls – lintels, reinforced concrete rings.
5. – 8. Horizontal load-bearing structures: functional and structural requirements, bounds to vertical structures. Reinforced concrete monolithical floor structures. Assembled and semi-assembled floor structures: wooden structures, floor structures from reinforced concrete or prestressed panels, floor structures from ceramic components or steel sheets and combined floor systems. Vaults.
9. Overhangs and recessed structures: balcony, loggias, terraces, bay windows, attics, design solution, thermal bridge breaks and thermal insulation
10. Skeleton structures (frame or slab structures). Masonry peripheral walls in monolithic skeletons.
11. Combined structures. Structural systems for multy story high buildings, superstructures – design principles, material variations, design examples.
12. Chimneys and ventilation flues – principles of the design.
13. Vertical non-load-bearing walls: requirements on functional properties of partitions, structural, fire safety and acoustic requirements. Classification of partition constructions according to material and technology: masonry, monolithic or prefabricated partitions.

Work placements

Not applicable.

Aims

Acquisition of detailed view in building constructional systems. Acquisition of profound and detailed knowledge in part of building constructions applied to structural principles and own constructions with application of materials, vertical (bearing and non-load-bearing) and horizontal bearing structures including detailed adaptation of completion constructions and composite action.
Issue knowledge assuring preparedness to instruction in another grade of building construction and in following professional subjects.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Extent and forms are specified by guarantor’s regulation updated for every academic year.
