The course is intended to teach English as a foreign language at general level. Also dealt with is ESP. It is focused on practical, everyday communication for the international workplace.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures for everyday communication at pre-intermediate level.

Prerequisites

Course is intended for students who are familiar with the language at elementary level. They are expected to have the knowledge and skills corresponding to Tech Talk Elementary.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To pass this course test it is necessary, apart from active participation in the class and individual home preparation, to pass the credit test, which is divided into three parts written on pre-set dates throughout the semester. Altogether it is required to collect at least 30 points out of 50 in these tests. In case this benchmark of 60% is not achieved there is a possibility for the student to resit the test, however containing all three parts. The resit test takes place in the first week of the exam period. Finally, students' work in the e-learning support of the course is also reflected in the overall course assessment.

Aims

The aim of the course is to equip students for real-life tasks that arise in a wide range of technical occupations.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is systematically checked by the teacher. Students are allowed to miss 2 seminars. As long as the number of missed seminars is higher, additional condition may be set up by the teacher in justified cases in order to meet the course-unit credit requirements.
