Autor: Jan ProkopiusWhat do filaments for 3D printing, sutures in surgery, bone substitutes or peeling lotion have in common? Their common thread is biopolymers, a useful group of materials with a wide range of applications. They will be the focus of the eleventh edition of the international conference series European Symposium on Biopolymers (ESBP), which the Faculty of Chemistry of Brno University of Technology (FCH) will host from 13-15 September 2023. We asked Stanislav Obruča from the conference organisation committee to give a brief introduction.
How far back in history does the conference go?
The conference began in 2000 in Münster, Germany, when it was held for the first time under the auspices of the world-renowned expert Professor Alexander Steibuchel. The most recent edition of the conference took place in 2019 in Straubing in southern Germany. The regular two-year interval was then interrupted by the COVID19 pandemic, and Brno will soon have a great opportunity to continue the interrupted tradition. The attractive premises of the Brno Observatory and Planetarium will host the conference.
Stanislav Obruča from the conference organisation committee | Autor: Jan ProkopiusWhy the Faculty of Chemistry and Brno?
Entrusting the FCH with the organisation of the eleventh edition is a clear recognition of the high quality, originality and continuity of biopolymer research carried out at this faculty. Examples of excellence include tissue engineering or the successful Hydal biotechnology.
What is the aim of the conference?
This is a multidisciplinary conference with the aim of creating a discussion platform for scientists and practitioners who are interested in biopolymers such as polyesters, polysaccharides or polyamides. The conference traditionally brings together a range of experts from a variety of disciplines, from molecular biologists and biotechnologists, to experts in the characterisation and processing of biopolymers, to application specialists in fields such as agriculture, cosmetics and medicine. They can share their knowledge, experience and opinions on all aspects related to biopolymers.
What distinguished experts will you welcome?
Diversity, interdisciplinarity and the high quality of the guests and speakers are the typical features of the various editions of this conference series. More than 150 experts will come to Brno not only from Europe but also from other continents.
The biggest highlights of the programme are the lectures by Professors Kumar Sudesh (Universiti Sains Malaysia), Bernd Rehm (Griffith University, Australia) and Bjørn Christensen (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), who are among the world's top experts in the field of production, research and applications of biopolymers.
