Biotechnology HYDAL (developed at Brno University of Technology) was awarded with The 2015 European Frost & Sullivan Award for Technology Innovation. HYDAL enables turning waste cooking oil into a biodegradable polymer (PHA). It is also the first biotechnology capable of industrial scale production of biopolymer from waste, which means it does not need sources from the food chain (such as sugar, starch or corn). Technology was developed and patented at Brno University of Technology by a team of prof. Ivana Marova (Faculty of Chemistry) and brought to market by company NAFIGATE Corporation a.s.
Technology is now being used in China within Suzhou Hydal Biotech project. Final biopolymer will be used as a source for wide range of products especially in food or agriculture industry.
