In early July, New York hosted the world final of the Imagine Cup 2011 student competition. Next to Masaryk University students, a BUT team also represented the Czech Republic taking the third place with its FireFighters game!
This year's student IT competition had more than 350,000 participants with 400 contestants in 124 teams from 70 countries getting through to the final. Among them were two Czech teams: Celebrio Software in the Software Design category and WickedTeam from BUT in the Game Design for Windows and Xbox category.
The WickedTeam presented its FireFighters. This is a real-time strategy in which the player marshals fire brigades in an effort to put out a forest fire in the quickest and most effective way to save human lives and the forest. The third place went to this game, which is a great success for Brno and the Czech Republic considering the huge competition. FireFighters enchanted the Imagine Cup jury by its graphics and ease of play being only slightly criticised for not stressing fire prevention thus lacking in educational effect.
GINA, last year's MIC Accelerator participant and Imagine Cup 2010 winner received an award, too. At a gala evening, Zbyněk Poulíček and Boris Procházka also appeared on the stage (with mayor of NYC and other world business VIP's delivering their speeches after them) to share their success with this year's participants motivating them to further develop their projects.
