Once again, the prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2024, which ranks educational institutions around the world by field of study, is here. For the first time in history, Brno University of Technology has appeared in ten categories, making it one of the best Czech representatives in the ranking. In previous rankings, BUT confirmed its quality especially in architecture and material sciences. This year, it repeated these successful rankings and appeared in new rankings, for example in natural sciences and environmental sciences.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 distinguishes two main categories of subjects, broad subject areas and individual subjects.
Of the five broad subject areas, BUT appeared in two this year. It has been one of the world's top universities in engineering and technology for many years. This year, it jumped up eight places to the 281st position, making it the second best Czech university in the rankings behind Czech Technical University (CTU), which ranked 182nd. For the first time, BUT has also been ranked in natural sciences, where it ranks 451-500th and 4th among Czech universities, led by Charles University (UK).
The five broad subject areas are further subdivided into 55 individual subjects. BUT succeeded in eight of them, the most of any Czech university.
The top quality of BUT was confirmed in architecture and material sciences. In both cases, the university defended its 201st position. It is newly ranked in the same position in the category of mechanical engineering, which represents an improvement of fifty places compared to 2023. In materials science, it is the best among Czech universities and in the other two categories it shares the first positions with CTU.
Among the 300 best universities in the world, Brno University of Technology is also ranked in the category of electrical and electronic engineering, where it repeated its 251st-300th position and is one of the two Czech representatives in the ranking together with CTU.
Among the top 400 universities, BUT is ranked 301st-350th in the chemistry category.
In three other categories, BUT is among the top 500, always in the 401st-450th position: in environmental sciences, computer science and mathematics.

Year after year the university strengthens its position on the world map of higher education and research. We are living in a time when Europe and the world are facing many challenges in which technology plays a crucial role. They provide an opportunity not only to deliver the necessary technical solutions, but also to strengthen the independence and competitiveness of the economies of nation states and their communities, and ultimately to contribute to their stable and democratic development. Technical universities like ours play a key role in this. Excellence and quality have become a key theme in the evaluation, differentiation and prestige of universities in Europe and the world. International rankings are important indicators in this, giving the possibility of global comparison," says its rector Ladislav Janíček on BUT’s latest results. He also mentions the increasing influence of the rankings on the establishment and development of international cooperation, on the decision of applicants when choosing their studies, and on the choice of universities for their further work and development of professional potential by academics and researchers from all over the world.
"Internationalization, the attraction of foreign students, academics, and researchers is a crucial topic for revitalizing the professional and strategic development of universities. That's why we have been working hard on rankings in recent years to show the world who we are and what we can do. And there is indeed a lot of it," highlights the rector.
"I am therefore very grateful for the rankings achieved by our faculties and institutes of higher education, their academic and research staff, and all those who create favourable conditions for them to work in order to achieve the results for which we are ranked. I also thank our students, especially those who, through their activity and results, set an example for all those who decide where to study and help communicate the study of technology as an opportunity to realize their dreams in the world. I believe this is also excellent news for our students, as they will certainly appreciate that they are studying at a quality university," the rector of BUT concludes with his thanks.
In the current QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, 1 559 institutions have been ranked, with 64 universities debuting
Among the most important indicators that determine an institution's ranking are academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, the h-index, which reflects the scientific output of a researcher, and international research network.
The aim of the rankings is to provide prospective university applicants, employers or government authorities with information on the institutional level.
