In addition to Brno University of Technology, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication is also marking a milestone today—its 65th anniversary. Although the first electrical engineering courses were offered as early as 1905, the independent faculty wasn’t established until 1959.
The first graduates of the FEEC, 1960 | Autor: BUT archiveIn the 1990s, the faculty swiftly adapted to technological advancements and began offering IT courses. It was during this period that the faculty was renamed the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Eventually, IT branched off with the creation of the Faculty of Information Technology, leading to the faculty's current name in 2002 – the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication.
Today, FEEC stands at the forefront of electrical engineering education and research. Currently, the faculty boasts over 3,100 students who have access to modern laboratories equipped with the latest technologies, including laboratories for directional and satellite communications, renewable energy sources, very high voltages, and many others.
Thanks to the newly accredited study program in Chip Design and Modern Semiconductor Technologies, the faculty systematically focuses on semiconductor technologies that are the foundation of modern electronics. The YSpace university club, which focuses on developing a student satellite, illustrates the university's commitment to advanced space technologies. It also plays a key role in advanced research and development, including innovations in cybersecurity and robot-assisted analysis of contaminated areas. Through these activities, the faculty not only educates future experts but also significantly contributes to the advancement of technologies that are changing the world.
We wish the faculty continued success, with many more years of education, research, and new enthusiastic people and ideas.
In the gallery photos, you can see how the 25th anniversary was celebrated and get a glimpse of the Department of Automatic Computers, the Department of Electrical Technology, the Department of Line Technology, and the Analog Computers Laboratory in the 1960s. For some amusement, the gallery also includes Czech-written memories from students and successful graduates, particularly about Professor Kalendovský. These texts are from the publication Electrical Engineering at Brno University of Technology in the Years 1899-2013, published in 2013. Professor Kalendovský served as the dean of the faculty for two terms, from 1959 to 1962 and from 1966 to 1970, and was the subject of many anecdotes.
