The solar corona from FME became an Astronomy Picture of the Day of NASA
The solar corona from FME became an Astronomy Picture of the Day of NASA
The picture of the solar corona, which was seen during last year's total solar eclipse over South America, is today's
Astronomy picture of the Day of NASA
(APOD). The data were acquired last year at the end of the year in Argentina by Andreas Möller, who then approached the Brno mathematician Miloslav Druckmüller from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at BUT with a request to create a final photograph. This time, the prestigious picture of the day has two authors.
Total Solar Eclipse 2020 | Autor: Miloslav Druckmüller and Andreas Moller (NASA/APOD)
Miloslav Druckmüller is an internationally recognized expert in digital image processing. Thanks to him, from the original 55 shots of the solar eclipse a picture, which NASA chose today as its Astronomy Picture of the Day, was created. The image is completely unique for two reasons. The first is a huge cloud of plasma, the so-called CME (Corona Mass Ejection), which was ejected by the Sun about 3 to 4 hours before the eclipse. This cloud is pictured to the left of the Sun. The second reason is a small "blurred spot" in the bottom left corner, which is actually a comet belonging to the so-called Kreutz group of comets. A comet with a core size of about 15 km was only 4.4 million km (about three solar averages) away from the solar surface at the time of the eclipse and disappeared, evaporated, a few hours after the eclipse.
NASA's Astronomical Picture of the Day (APOD) is an award for the most interesting photograph from the space, selected daily by NASA astronomers Jerry Bonnell and Robert Nemiroff. The motto of the event is "Discover the Universe" and since 1995, when the first picture was selected, it has become one of the most recognized of its kind in the world. APOD is watched by millions of visitors on social networks, and the original texts on space objects are now translated into twenty-three languages, including Czech.
Professor Druckmüller last scored his photo last summer when NASA selected his picture of
Comet NEOWISE
. He already has a total of 11 astronomy pictures of the day on his account.
