Fracture toughness tests of steels can yield an important information about the cohesive strength of grain boundaries in case of intergranular fracture mode. Current evaluation methods, however, completely ignore the micro-tortuosity of the crack front.Related shielding effects might substantially reduce the real crack driving force in comparison with the standardly assumed straight crack front.The aim of the project is to develop a methodology for estimation of the shielding level for 2D- and 3D intergranular crack front branches. This correction would enable to reduce the data scatter band and to obtain a more relevant information on the grain boundary properties. Using this method, experimental data obtained from fracture toughness-, stress corosion cracking- and fatigue tests will be evaluated for various (mostly low alloy) steels, An analysis of impurity concentrations at grain boundaries will also be performed.
