Concentrated attention is paid to the protection of water in the Czech Republic, mainly in relation to the preparation for the EU accession and approximation to the European legislation. The construction of new WWTP's and reconstruction of existing WWTP's has led to reduction of discharged pollution. Likewise, the quality of surface water caused by specific organic substances, heavy metals and area pollution. All Czech settlements above PE 10,000 are provided with a minimum of the basic mechanical-biological treatment of wastewater. The long-term priority is the construction of wastewater treatment plants and sewerage systems in municipalities with a size of PE 2,000 - 5,000 EO, reconstruction and upgrading of existing wastewater treatment plants in the category exceeding PE 5,000 and additional construction of WWTP's to be connected to sewerage systems in settlements with less than PE 2,000.
