Original Abstract

The effect of rubber aggregates and acrylic polymer binder on the durability of modified cement mortars exposed to acid solutions was investigated. Mortar specimens were prepared with a type CEM I cement and siliceous sand, as well as by substituting 25% of sand with shredded automobile tires and by adding acrylic polymer binder in two percentages (10% and 20% w/w of the cement mass). Some of the specimens were only air cured, at laboratory conditions, and their compressive strength and water absorption were determined. The rest specimens were immersed in acid solutions (hydrochloric acid, sulfate acid, nitric acid), after 28 days of initial air curing, and stored at laboratory temperature. Compressive strength tests, mass measurements and visual inspection took place for 28 days. The results showed that the use of rubber aggregates resulted in significantly lower compressive strength values in comparison to the reference mortar. Rubber aggregates decreased water absorption; the use of acrylic polymer binder further reduced it. The compressive strength values were lower for the specimens stored in CA solution, followed by SA and NA solutions. Mass loss was higher for the specimens stored in SA solution, followed by CA and NA solutions. The specimens without polymer binder showed similar mass loss. In general, the addition of acrylic polymer binder decreased strength and mass loss of the mortars attacked by acids.
