Original Abstract

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are a group of polyester materials which are accumulated in the form of intracellular granules by a wide variety of bacterial strains. Due to their mechanical properties similar to those of plastics of petrochemical origin and their biodegradability, PHA are considered being an environmentally-friendly alternative to common plastics such as polyethylene or polypropylene. Moreover, thanks to their biocompatibility, PHA find many potential applications in medicine. However, the limiting factor preventing PHA to enter the market is their high price as compared to polymers of petrochemical origin.
