Original Abstract
Low temperature plasma technique was used for surface treatment and modification of glass fibers with the aim to improve wettabilily and adhesion between the fibers and polyester matrix and thereby ultimate mechanical properties of finite composite. The fibers were plasma treated by argon gas and modified by haxamethyldisiloxane and vinyltriethoxysilane vapors. The adhesion as measured by interfacial and interlaminar shear strength was determined from microbond technique, new variation of pull out test, and from three-point short beam shear test, respectively. Shear strength of the plasma treated and modified glass fibers/polyester composite systems were compared with those reinforced with untreated and commercially sized fibers. Influence of water environment on the interlaminar shear strength of pultruded composites reinforced with commercially sized glass fibers was tested for short beams stored in a cool and boiled water for a different time.
