Original Abstract

The ability of alkali-activated alumino silicates to immobilize heavy metals in their structure is known in general. This study examines the way of fixation of heavy metals (Ba, Cu, Pb) in alkali activated matrix. The matrix was prepared by alkaline activation (KOH, K-silicate) of mixture of fly ash and blast furnace slag (BFS). The microstructure was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The chemical state of fixed heavy metals was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). After alkaline activation all used metals formed its insoluble salts. According to EDS mapping and SEM Ba and Cu are rather cumulated in some regions, than be dispersed throughout the matrix. On the contrary Pb is dispersed throughout the matrix.
