Original Abstract

Any analysis of continuous acoustic emission (AE) waveforms requires wideband AE sensors with a flat response curve, mainly because the characteristics of the measured processes are usually in the frequency domain. This paper presents a short description of the theory and basic principles of a broadband AE sensor. Most attention is given to the design of a new type of broadband sensors with pyramidal active elements; in this context, the authors describe the relation between the element dimensions, electrical impedance measured by an impedance analyser, and frequency response measured for the surface Rayleigh wave calibration.
