Original Abstract

Despite of great advances in veterinary anaesthesia, the risk of death associated with general anaesthesia in the horse remains obstinately high. Recently an accurate perioperative mortality rate in a large population of horses was published as 1.8 % (for people it is about 0.01 % and 0.15 in small animals). Even if emergency abdominal cases are excluded, the death rate is still 0.9 %. The 39 % case of sudden death were due to cardiac arrest. Further, clinical experiences indicate quite clear correlation between training condition and way of keeping the horse and predisposition to sudden cardiovascular death during anaesthesia. The correlation evolves a hypothesis about hidden system causes influencing capability of cardiovascular system (CVS) control in horses that could be a reason of the lethal anaesthetic complications. To be able to verify or exclude this hypothesis it is necessary to analyse performance of the CVS in the horse under different condition.
