Original Abstract

The main waste arising during the biodiesel production is glycerol. The purification of glycerol is economically challenging due to the high amount of residual plant pigments, NaOH, methanol and water. This waste substrate can be used as a substrate for microbial production of carotenoids by carotenogenic yeasts. To increase carotenoid production using glycerol as substrate, the random mutageneses using methanesulfonic acid (EMS) were used. This study was focused on mutant strains production properties after one year in comparison to their previous production properties. These mutant yeast strains were examined after a one-year period after mutageneses for carotenoid production properties stability. The stability of strongly conserved sequences of genomic DNA, especially rDNA D1/D2 large ribosomal subunit was monitored as well.
