Original Abstract
Management of spent nuclear fuel is a Calx Achillis of nuclear power generation. There are two major concepts how to deal with spent fuel – uranium/plutonium recycling with mixed oxide fuel production, and deep geological repository storage. Geological repository seems to be necessary for any concepts proposed; however, it is hardly imaginable for many nuclear engineers to store whole spent fuel after once-through fuel cycle there. Amount of stored spent nuclear fuel has to be minimized. One of proposed technologies for minimizing of spent nuclear fuel amount is very challenging accelerator driven transmutation technology. Accelerator driven systems (ADS) might be used not only as transmutors for spent nuclear fuel but also as energy amplifiers within thorium (as well as uranium) fuel cycle and/or very intensive neutron sources for research, medicine, and other applications (e.g. SNS, IREN, ESS).
