Original Abstract
Formation of (nanosized) particles dispersion in form of in-situ synthetized intermetallic phase has been found as effective way leading to strength properties enhancement and at the same time keeping the initial ductility of the aluminium alloy matrix. Strengthening of aluminium matrix by NbAl3 intermetallic phase has been investigated in the paper. One of ways how to produce nano-size particles in situ in aluminium-alumina matrix is application of mechano-chemical process taking place during mechanical ball milling. Aluminium and niobium(V) oxide powders were subjected to high energy ball milling. The structural characteristics of the powderparticles were studied by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Intermetallic phase Nb3Al from mechanically alloyed powder has been evidenced. The initially aluminium matrix changed to alumina oxide for longer milling time as a result of strong exothermic reaction.
