Original Abstract
The presented paper deals with the problems of analysis and design of perforated thin-walled steel Sigma beams with respect to lateral torsional buckling. The Sigma beams are mono-symmetrical profiles loaded in the plane perpendicular to axis of symmetry. The application of these profiles is in the storage systems and expedient flooring structures as floor girders which are subjected to the bending. In some cases the beams are not laterally restraint and therefore the effect of lateral torsional buckling may occur. In this paper the design procedure listed in European standard EN 1993-1-1 and Czech national annex NB.3 is verified by testing in laboratory conditions. The ultimate resistance is first derived from maximal load achieved during the testing. Since the problem of load carrying capacity is not only the problem of ultimate strength but also the problem of appurtenant displacements (deflections, strain, twist), additionally the ultimate resistance is defined as a strength corresponding to the predefined limit for lateral deflection of the beam, resp. buckled compressed flange. So defined load carrying capacity considering the limit for lateral deflection better reflects a reality which could occur during the structure operation.
